CHROME,visual and audio pattern creation through colour chromatography
Textile researcher Berit Greinke and composer for electroacoustic music Alessandro Altavilla will give a collaborative workshop based on the project CHROME (live), that investigates visual and audio pattern creation through colour chromatography.

Berit Greinke is a researcher in textile design and digital sound. She has studied at Art School Berlin, and graduated from Central St Martin’s College of Art & Design, gaining an MA in Design for Textile Futures in 2009.From October 2010 she has undertaken an EPSRC funded PhD in Media and Arts Technology at Queen Mary University of London. Her practice-based research focus is on cross-modal experience, developing interactive installations of textiles and digital sound. Her work has been exhibited internationally and has won multiple awards, such as the Surface Bursary by the London Printworks Trust funded by the Leverhulme Trust, NOBELini Award funded by the Medical Research Council and a DAAD annual scholarship.
Alessandro Altavilla is a sound artist, sound designer for cinema and an electroacoustic music composer. His research focuses on augmented urban experience through sound and mobile technology. He gained an M.Res. in Digital Media, Culture Lab under the supervision of Atau Tanaka, after obtaining a B.Mus. in electroacoustic music composition in Italy.
Arbeidsform:
The artists will give an overview of their work and research involving textiles and digital sound, conduct an open 3-day workshop to explore techniques and materials to create chromatic prints and sounds, and perform a live set involving textile and digital interfaces.
TALK: Textiles and sound interaction
Tuesday February 21th, 9 -10.30am
E-textile designer and researcher Berit Greinke will give an overview of her work and research involving textiles and sound. She will present the idea of ‘performative textiles’ and talk about her experience with cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Sound designer and electroacoustic music composer Alessandro Altavilla will talk about his research on sound interactions between different media, from sound maps and mobile technology to textile sonifications.
WORKSHOP: Chrome - A material performance using colour chromatography
Part 1, Tuesday February 21th, 11am-1pm
Textiles: CHROME explores colour changes using material properties. Berit will lead this session and introduce participants to the process and materials.
We will explore first simple techniques of colour chromatography using felt pens, filter paper and textiles. Participants will observe, take notes and photos. First results will be collected in a collaborational ‘lab book’.
Tuesday February 21th, 2pm-4pm
Sound: Alessandro will introduce the participants to the hard- and software involved in the audio interpretation of the chromatic change. Participants will brainstorm and sketch out different ways of realising sonic reactive systems, inspired by e.g. synesthesia or pixels analysis.
Part 2, Wednesday February 22th, 9am-4pm
Textiles: Introduction to screenprinting materials and techniques. Screenprinting samples. Introduction to supporting techniques: making materials using bondaweb and heatpress, and lasercut. The lab book will be continued and students can start final prototypes based on their findings and interests.
Sound: After the observation of the first prototypes produced we will discuss what kind of sounds we want to design and collectively build the sound interactive system with Max/MSP for Chrome Live.
Part 3, Thursday February 23th, 9am – 4pm
Textiles: Working on final prototype Sound: Final refinements of the sonic experience in order to be presented as performances in the show & tell, creating a small orchestra of chromatographic scores.
2.30pm: Tidy up 3pm: Show & Tell
Part 4: Performance on Thursday night February 23th; (tbc with BEK)
